The Secret War has started

May 1, 2012 5 comments

I believe it has been running for a while now, but there is currently a browser-based game called The Secret War that is run by Funcom. As one might guess, this is connected to the upcoming MMO The Secret World.

Personally I won’t be touching this game. This is simply because it is connected to Facebook and you have to have a Facebook account to participate. I don’t have a Facebook account, nor will I get one, so I pass on this one.

If Funcom wants to use Facebook for this that’s fine – but I would not be happy if there would be any dependencies in The Secret World to use Facebook.

MMO Community Greatness: The Newbie Blogger Initiative

May 1, 2012 Comments off

Today on May 1st is the start of what promises to be a really neat month for MMO Community – The Newbie Blogger Initiative! One month of community encouragement and support for everyone and anyone who wants to start blogging about MMOs.

A few weeks ago Syp from Biobreak (and Massively) contacted a number of MMO bloggers with the idea that during one month people in the MMO blogging community should get together to provide support, encouragement and advice for anyone who wants to start a blog and write about their MMO gaming – starting today on May 1st. Over 60 bloggers have signed up for this so far to help and sponsor. A number of ┬áblog posts have already been made to kick off the event!

If you have been considering to perhaps start a blog to write about something within your MMO gaming interest, this is a great opportunity to get started. In the coming month participating bloggers will post advice and suggestions as well as jump in to read and comment on blogs that are starting up. It is a great way to get some initial readers when you are starting up a blog – normally it not so easy to get readers initially.

I think this is a great way to get part of the MMO community together to help and support each other – great initiative Syp!

Personally I started blogging about MMOs almost 5 years ago (June 2007) and I am happy that I did. There has been ups and downs and periods of high traffic as well as quite low, but in the end it has enriched my MMO gaming experience and interest.

If you have been thinking about starting a blog, then let’s get started!

  • Head over to Biobreak and read Syp’s announcement post
  • Head over and register at the NBI forums
  • Think about what you want to write about – many different MMOs, just a single MMO, write about adventures in your gaming sessions, reviews, provide advice in certain areas etc.
  • How do you want to present it? Mainly writing, or use lots of pictures, screenshots or videos? Write as in-game character or out-of-character? There are many ways to go about it.
  • What to use to write the blog? There are a number of options available, with two of the most common ones being WordPress and Blogger.
  • For these and many other questions, take advantage of the NBI forums and participating blogs to get advice and suggestions
  • Once you are ready and have started up your blog, announce it in NBI forums

There are lots of things that can be said about writing a blog and during this month I will do a few posts around this topic, as well as jump in on the NBI forums and visit new blogs that get announced and started there.

If you end up getting overwhelmed or confused by options or suggestions, then there is a single advice I want to give:

Just do it

Hope to see you around!
