Pigs in space

No, this has nothing to do with the Muppet Show – it is about the news that space combat in the upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic game may possibly not be a big deal, as reported by Massively. This should not really come as a surprise, looking at a quote from when space combat was announced, from Shacknews:

Space combat is an alternative gameplay experience to the primary game of storytelling, questing, and ground-based combat.

Note her the keywords alternative and primary. Gameplay that is not primary and is also referred to as alternative is not really something that they put much focus on. Instead this seems to me to be on par with the focus that crafting got initially in Tabula Rasa, Star Trek Online and Champions Online – well, perhaps slightly better.

This may be a duplicate comment.

I don’t see how they’d have the time to do a good job on a spaceflight sim and a ground based MMO. Also, as someone pointed out at MMOGamerchick, most of the space battles from, the movies are linear affairs that could easily be represented on rails. Even the big space battle at the beginning of Ep III is presented as a linear race to get to one of the capital ships (though a naval battle is certainly happening in the background). The the most iconic space battle in EP IV is very linear from Luke’s perspective, particularly the race to the death star and the run down the trench. That’s one reason they were able do such a good job representing it with vector graphics in the 80s (I still play that game when I get a chance).

In fact, Ep VI has the only big “naval” style free form battle, at least from the standpoint of the protagonists engaged in it, that I can think of from any of the movies.

STO is the only SciFi MMO so far that I know of that has included both space and ground-based gameplay from start. It is not an easy thing to succeed with.

I was never bothered that SWG only had thr ground-based gameplay when it was released. In fact, even though I bought the Jump to Lightspeed expansion back then I did not play that part much, because I did not like it.

Most of the intersting stuff in the movies happened on some kind of ground anyway.
